Musician, Composer, Performer, Educator, Author, Clinician Adjudicator
Mark Andrew Cook is a musician and composer working and living in Maryland.
He served as the Director for Music Theory and Composition in the School of Music at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. He was a member of the Jazz Studies faculty and the pianist for the SU Faculty Jazz Group.
Dr. Cook was promoted to Full Professor of Music in May of 2016.
Also in 2016, Dr. Cook was extended the honor to be nominated and inducted into the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
Prior to his appointment at Shepherd University, he taught Music Theory and Aural Skills courses at The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music within The Catholic University of America. Additionally, he served as the Director of the CUA Jazz Ensemble.
He was an Adjunct Instructor in Music Theory and Aural Skills at Towson University and was an Associate Professor of Music at Montgomery College, teaching theory subjects, Jazz studies subjects, and (at various times) serving as the Conductor for the Jazz Ensemble, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and, lastly, as Music Director and Conductor for the Montgomery College Symphony Orchestra.
He was a Clinician and subsequently the Director for the Maryland Jazz Educators Summer Jazz Consortium (1990-2010), Associate Director (2002-2017). His service to MD SJC was from 1984-2018.
Dr. Cook served as host for Jamey Aebersold’s “Anyone Can Improvise” workshops from 1990-1998.
He served as the Director for the Shepherd University Summer Jazz Camp and “JV” Summer Jazz (which he created) and was also a clinician and faculty member.
For four years, he served as Choirmaster and Director of Music Liturgy for St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Laytonsville, MD. He and his wife Helen are parishioners and members of the Chancel Choir at St. John's Episcopal Parish, Hagerstown, Maryland.
Dr. Cook is an Honorary inducted member into Phi Mu Alpha, Xi Epsilon Chapter, the National Men's Music Fraternity.
He is an Honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Eta Tau Chapter, the National Women's Music Sorority.
He served as Faculty Advisor to both organizations.
He is an Honorary member of the Service Fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, for which he served as Faculty Advisor.
Dr. Cook is a member of the Society of Composers. He created and served as Faculty Advisor for the SU School of Music Student Chapter of The Society of Composers.
He performs throughout the country, and is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator.
